Funco Du Santos is a small-scale, sustainable, and off-grid hotel and restaurant on the island of Fogo in Cape Verde, run by Du Santos and his family. You will find Funco Du Santos in the middle of the Chã das Caldeiras nature reserve, at the foot of the Pico do Fogo volcano.
The Chã das Caldeiras nature reserve is a spectacular place. The Pico do Fogo volcano is the strength of the area. This volcano last erupted in in 2014: a relatively small crater on the southern slope of the big volcano largely destroyed the villages in the area. Funco Du Santos is built on top of the lava from 2014.
The volcano’s lava flows are also the lifeblood of the region, and residents feel a deep connection to their volcano. Local residents are (still) returning, building new homes, and living largely off the fertile soil in the area combined with small-scale tourism.
About us
The Santos family has lived in Chã das Caldeiras for generations. Before we built our hotel, family members already worked as cooks, hotel staff and tour guides. In addition, we worked in agriculture and construction. All this experience comes together in our own hotel.
