Volcano hikes

Climbing Pico do Fogo is an unforgettable experience. Pico do Fogo is the highest point in Cape Verde, rising to 2,829 metres above sea level. Chã das Caldeiras, where the hike begins, lies at around 1,700 metres, so you climb approximately 1,100 metres to reach the summit.

You can also climb the ‘Small Volcano’ (Pico Pequeno), the volcanic cone formed during the 2014 eruption on the slopes of Pico do Fogo. It reaches around 2,000 metres above sea level, meaning a climb of around 300 metres from Chã das Caldeiras.

Beyond the two volcanoes, the volcanic landscape itself is worth exploring. Walk across the vast black lava fields, shaped by past eruptions, or explore one of the natural lava caves hidden in the landscape

Bordeira mountain range

The Bordeira is the mountain range surrounding Chã das Caldeiras, rising to almost 2,700 metres above sea level. From Chã das Caldeiras, the steep slopes rise almost 1,000 metres, offering spectacular views over the caldera, the lava fields and Pico do Fogo.

For a more adventurous hike, climb steeply up the Bordeira via the Via Ferrata, continue to its highest point, or reach Bocha Rocha through the green Monte Velha forest.

Prefer a slower pace? Follow the foot of the Bordeira past small, secluded houses and enjoy the peace and quiet of this unique landscape.

Around the island: Mosteiros and São Filipe

There is much more to discover on Fogo beyond Chã das Caldeiras. The lively town of São Filipe is a great place to explore, with colorful houses, beautiful squares and a bustling local market.

From São Filipe, you can take a full-day drive around the island, passing through Mosteiros, Salinas and other beautiful places along the way.

You can also descend from Chã das Caldeiras to Mosteiros, hiking down through the green forests and coffee plantations of northern Fogo. The trail ends in this unique coastal town, where the mountains meet the sea.
